Export include salt, sugar, rubber and local goods. Imports include grain, coal, steel and fertilizers. The harbour is within the operational zone of the Sanya Salvage Station of the Guangzhou Maritime Rescue and Salvage Bureau. HK Shipping Gazette (3.7.96) reported that Sanya's Nanshan Deep-water port, which was under construction, would have an annual capacity of five million tonnes, which would make it one of China's largest foreign trade ports.
Located in the southern most part of Hainan Island. It undertakes the seaborne passenger and cargo transport to and from the southeastern and southern areas of the island. Sanya has shipping routs to all the major ports in China. Passenger and cargo liner services operate to Hong Kong. Telecommunications facilities in the city are very modern, connecting to more than 900 major Chinese cities and 159 countries and regions in the world.
Sanya is the southern meeting point of the east, west and middle highways on the island. It has scheduled buses to places throughout the island. There are railroads for passengers and cargo transport from Sanya to the Yinggehai salt field, Basuo (164 km) and shilu (214 km).
