Convoys

Three convoys transit the canal daily, two southbound and one northbound.
Vessel's complete transit of the canal in approximately 12 to 18 hours.

Port Said - Southbound

The first Southbound convoy starts at 0000 hrs, until 0500 hrs, with arrival limit 1900 hrs.

As an additional facility, vessels arriving from 1900 to 2100 hrs may join the first SB convoy against an additional charge of 3 percent of the canal dues (maximum 7000 SDR) or 5 percent (maximum 10500 SDR) in case of arrival between 2100 and 2200 hrs. Vessels arriving after 2200 hrs may join the first SB convoy, if traffic conditions permit, against the payment of a surchage equal to 10% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 20.000

The second convoy starts at 0700 hrs, until 0900 hrs with arrival limit 0300 hrs. This convoy makes fast at Al Ballah West branch and is limited to ships with max. draft 42 feet with 135 feet beam and 39 feet draft with 145 feet beam.

Loaded tankers carrying grade "A" petroleum, LPG and LNG vessels carrying chemicals in bulk and radioactive substances are not allowed to join this convoy.

Vessels arriving from 0300 to 0400 hrs may join the 2nd SB convoy against an additional charge of 3 percent of canal dues (maximum 7000 SDR) or 5 percent (maximum 10500 SDR) in case of arrival from 0400 to 0500 hrs. Vessels arriving after 0500 hrs may join the second SB convoy, if traffic conditions permit, against the payment of a surcharge equal to 10% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 20000.

Vessels allowed to join the second SB convoy as per circ No. 2/2003, 3/2003, if they arrive between 0300-0400 hrs may join second SB convoy against the payment of a surcharge equal to 8% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 17000 and vessels arriving after 0400 hrs may join second SB convoy against the payment of a surcharge equal to 10% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 20000.

The arrival limit time for vessels joining southbound convoys is on the basis of passing South of latitude 31 28.7 N.

Suez - Northbound

There is only one convoy NB starting at 0615 hrs until 1130 hrs, with arrival limit 0100 hrs for large container vessels, VLCCs, ULCCs, heavy bulkers and vessels with draft over 38 feet. For any other kind of vessel the arrival limit is 0300 hrs.

Tanker Group (i.e. LPG and LNG loaded or NGF, 3rd generation container ships, vessels over 38 feet draft and loaded tankers) arriving from 0100 to 0300 hrs may join Tankers Group against an additional charge of 3 percent of the canal dues (maximum 7000 SDR) or 5 percent (maximum 10500 SDR) in case of arrival from 0300 to 0400 hrs. Vessels arriving after 0400 hrs may join the NB convoy, if traffic conditions permit, against payment of surcharge equal to 10% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 20000.

Ships entitled to join the Ordinary Group arriving from 0300 to 0400 hrs can join their group against an additional charge of 3 percent of the canal dues (maximum 7000 SDR) or 5 percent (maximum 10500 SDR) in case of arrival from 0400 to 0500 hrs. Vessels arriving after 0500 hrs may join the group, if traffic conditions permit, against the payment of surcharge equal to 10% of the normal transit dues with a maximum of SDR 20000.

The above arrival limit time to join the convoy is on the basis of passing the following latitudes:
A) Tanker Group - North of Lat. 29 42.8 N
B) Ordinary Group - North of Lat. 29 48.33 N
